Shutter Doors

The Finishing Touches For Your Home

To put the finishing touches on the interior of your home, combine your window shutters with shutter doors.  Shutter doors are essentially a treatment for sliding glass, French and other styles of doors.  Don’t just stop at window treatments; complete the design package with an appropriate treatment for your doors too.

This kind of shutter has taken on multiple meanings.  In some cases the use of the word “door” when referring to shutters comes from the swinging movement of the shutter as it closes over the window.  Pay some attention to the terminology so that when you are looking for something specifically for your windows or doors, whatever the case may be, you will be clear on the terms.  A third meaning which can cause some confusion will be discussed below.

The door shutters can be mounted in various ways with a variety of mechanisms that fix it in place.  Usually the shutter is mounted to one side of the door.  The mounted shutter slides or swings as does a typical door, or folds to one side in accordion-like fashion.  Take a look at how the door is constructed to help you decide which type fits your needs and design plan.

Ideally, the design for the door shutter itself should complement or coordinate with the window treatments.  The same style that is used for the windows -- plantation, raised panel, cape cod, board and batten, etc -- can be used for the doors to create a uniform décor throughout the room or home.

Don’t get this type confused with roller shutter doors.  A roller shutter door is typically made of some metal alloy and is used primarily on businesses and store fronts.   The door is of industrial strength and rolls around a heavy head rail when open and is pulled down to the ground and securely fastened when closed.  Though there are some decorative choices so as to show off merchandise during non-business hours, their principal purpose is to protect against break-ins and vandalism.

Whether your “doors” are for your windows or doors, there are more and more choices available every day.  Do your research to zero-in on the kind of door you want.  Put a shutter on it for decorative reasons, for security, or both.
